A Publisher's Reflection

It's October 11th where has the time gone? I began this adventure in May and I cannot believe the journey this publishing company has taken me on. This post is a publisher's reflection:

I published “Through the Blinds” promoted it, conducted a reading, designed the cover etc. I managed to release my book to many places, including e-book style, while still maintaining rights and a lower price than my previous publishing companies.

I've been working tirelessly on “The Poet's Word (poems about writing).” I received submissions from all over the United States and world. So many poets were interested in such a clever publication.

I hired a couple interns who helped with the process. My goal was to introduce them to the realities and hard work of publishing while still maintaining dignity.

I utilized a talented artist to help create covers and our logo. I created a Cafe Press store with Steady Moon Press Merchandise. I created a professional website, blog, facebook page, LinkedIn group, Twitter account, Pinterest and more.

Still, the best experiences that has happened from this company is the relationships I have developed with authors, writers, publishers, readers, and people, who just flat out, are interested in poetry. It's been an amazing run thus far.

Steady Moon Press provides a voice to authors. We are working hard on our upcoming anthology “The Poet's Word” that provides readers a glimpse into the roller coaster world of writing. This company has fulfilled me in so many ways. I cannot wait until this publication is finished and is in YOUR hands. We are trying to make this happen soon!

Thanks to everyone who has supported me and my love of words.

Title: Letter From the Editor Intern:
What does it mean? Steady Moon Press (SMP)?

As its only Intern - I haven't really gotten around to asking myself, or its creator, Amanda, what it means. But having been with SMP for a quarter of a year I think I've figured it out.

Steady: It hasn't been that long folks. It hasn't been that long since the dreams of an upstart publishing company have come to realization. Amanda has been working very hard (in the fashion of The Little Engine that Could) compiling this book. Most may not know it, but compiling an anthology requires a hefty amount of sifting

(Read. Consult. Edit. Re-read. Re-edit. Reconvene. Re-re-read.) required.

It takes effort to make the image in your mind become a reality.

But I would say that this is a steady process.

Moon: I think of Neil Armstrong, low gravity, and night time.

None of these things really have to do with SMP or our steady process; no, I think the moon part is an indication of the mid-night oil being burned getting this shuttle ready for take-off. (alright, enough with the analogies).

Press: Well this is obvious, do I need to spell it out for you guys?
We're publishing a book.

Stay Tuned for More, Folks,
Juan (SMP's lone-wolf Intern)

SMP Anthology Update

SMP has chosen all authors who will be featured in "The Poet's Word (poems about writing)" We are currently awaiting a few contracts and arranging the order. We anticipate the book will come out in 2-4 months. This is an estimate, but we are very exciting for this anthology. Be on the lookout! We will also be posting the final author list here and on our blog when all contracts are received.

Thursday, September 6, 2012

Steady Moon Press's lead editor and owner will be doing a poetry reading on September 22nd at the Weston Library (VT) from 6-7 PM. More details to follow.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

So this is an entry that should have been written a couple days ago, but we are finished with accepting submissions for "A Poet's Word *Poems about Writing)." We have formed a quality anthology and have enjoyed screening entries from all over the world. Thanks to all of those who applied. For those of you who did not, visit www.steadymoonoress.com for upcoming submission openings.

The plan is to perfect and get this anthology up and running. This will take a few months as the formatting, editing, etc. takes time to do right.

After this book is completed Steady Moon will promote it along with the authors.

As of now, it is undecided if the next publication will be another anthology, or if SMP will open for single authored poetry books.

Whatever the future may hold, SMP is off to a grat start! I will be posting updates on the book as we progress. Keep writing!

Steady Mon Press Updates

I just wanted to send a Steady Moon Press Update. We have been accepting submissions for 3 weeks and have received poems about writing from all over the United States and world including France, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, and even India. I love how universal this theme is and love all the tremendously positive feedback I have received from writers and publishers around the world. One of the greatest perks of beginning this company has been the networking with such intelligent and passionate individuals.

Due to the abundance of submissions we are setting a deadline for submissions on August 31st so if you would like to submit, submit soon! Submission guidelines can be found at www.steadymoonpress.com and submissions should be sent to steadymoonpress@gmail.com.

Another great update for SMP is that we have established a networking relationship with Amy Pollard, editor of The  Brevity Poetry Review. We have talked about doing facebook guest appearances, blog guest appearances and more. Here is a section taken from their blog:

"William Shakespeare once quipped: "Brevity is the soul of wit." In light of this famous line, Brevity Poetry Review is a blogzine that seeks to publish poems of 30 lines or less. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, with blogzine issues published every few months on a scheduled date. There are 10 poems per issue. While Brevity is unable to provide monetary compensation at this time, featured authors have the potential to gain valuable experience and exposure. Without further ado, let us begin our poetic journey of brevity and beauty."

Meet SMP's newest intern:

Juan Payan-Lopez is going to be a senior at the University of New Hampshire; he double majors in Business Administration: Finance and English. Payan-Lopez's passion began in the 10th grade while reading contemporary classics such as Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, and more old-school style classics, such as Homer’s, The Odyssey. He did community service for a year at the school’s library and saturated his mind through voracious reading with extensive vocabulary, fundamental punctuation, experimental prose, and sharp syntax. During Payan-Lopez's college career, he has constructed his own creative writing blog and published works in his college newspaper. Payan-Lopez is very excited to be a part of Steady Moon Press.

Here is SMP's new intern's biography:
Catherine Faber began honing in on writing as her favorite subject of
study in high school creative writing and journalism classes. Years later,
after finishing an English major at Dartmouth College, poetry is her
passion. Her poems draw from her international childhood experiences, the
pain of loss, and the struggle of an adolescent trying to work her way into
the adult word. Her writing had been in Dartmouth's student publication
Bazaar, and online in articles for travel resource aggregate websites
bulstack.com and UpStateNH.com.

I wanted to post a heads up on SMP. There have been questions about the SMP format. For individual poetry books, we accept poetic narratives. This means a collection of poems that tells a story. This also extends to poetic diaries (a chronological display of personal poetry relating to one's life) as well as poetic memoirs (A topic illustrated through poetry on personal accomplishments, struggles, life changes, etc.) For our poetic anthologies we accept prose poetry, free verse, and traditional poetry. As for prose, this is often a confusing word. Prose is offering information in a more straightforward manner than that of poetry. Prose also is usually displayed in paragraph form. SMP does not encourage submitting common prose.

SMP does, however, encourage sending prose poetry. Yes, this is confusing, but different. Prose poetry can break away from traditional meters etc. but still offers a strong emotional effect and imagery. In other words, there is a deeper meaning to prose poetry than just conveying information, and there is poetic structure, not just paragraphs.

Additionally, SMP encourages free verse. This is when poets purposely break away from tradition, and write freely with uniquely structured stanzas and no fixed metrical pattern.

This is a very confusing topic, but people often confuse prose, prose poetry, and free verse. For even more of a break down on this topic look here:
http://www.types-of-poetry.org.uk/91-prose.htm

Thanks for following Steady Moon Press!

There is a lot of interest in the submission process. I am excited for the anthology competition that will be happening in the next couple of months. The theme will have something to do with the writing process. Details will follow and submission guidelines will be framed in a different manner than the book submissions. This will all be updated in days to come. If you have interest, you can start looking for 3-5 poems related to the writing process that may be eligible. Or, of course, you can start writing!

Monday, June 18, 2012

There's a lot going on at Steady Moon Press, a new publishing company that was founded in May. Right now we are working on Amanda Clark's fourth book, Through the Blinds, that is currently in the final stages. The book will be available on Amazon and the Steady Moon Press website (many other places online and stores as well) for $8.00. A second edition of Looking at the Moon is also in the making. To kick off some excitement about narrative/themed poetry Steady Moon Press will be conducting a poetry anthology contest in the next couple months. This will be based around a particular theme. Authors will be invited to send in 3-5 poems on ta particular topic. New and experienced authors will be welcomed. If selected, authors will have their poems published in an anthology, receive a free complimentary book, as well as receive a free author spot on the Steady Moon Press website. Although there are no royalty fees paid to authors for the selling of this book (there will be around to 15-30 authors selected) this is a spectacular opportunity for new and experienced writers of poetry to be part of a published poetic journal. The winners will receive great PR, a boost in their writer's resume, as well as the right to republish the poem anywhere else in the future (as long as there is a note that it was previously published by Steady Moon Press)
Additionally, Steady Moon is promoting the work of its talented logo designer, Joel Rudolph. Rudolph designs quality black ink drawings of states and their history as well as requested commissions of virtually any topic (weddings, activities, birthdays etc). He will soon have a link to his works on the SMP website. To start off, his featured works are Vermont History 8X11 signed posters for 10.00 each. This poster includes history and pictures/words all having to do with VT.

After this endeavor Steady Moon will be accepting submissions for books of narrative poetry. Poetic diaries, poetic memoirs, and poetic children's books all fall into this category. It may be a few months until these submission are accepted due to Clark's books, poetry readings, and the anthology contest. However, once we get going Steady Moon plans on publishing approximately 4-6 books a year (possibly more, we will see). We are a small company headed by an experienced author who has designed book covers, edited, formatted, made e-books, done a lot of PR, began audio books and more.

Note that Steady Moon Press will be screening submissions, and since we are a very small company (only publishing 4-6 books a year) to be blunt, there will be refusal letters. Clark, who has been published by a traditional publisher, as well as a literary journal, and numerous newspapers, still knows how devastating these refusal letters can be. However, anyone who has written a poetic narrative is encouraged to submit, and if they do not get accepted, keep on trying, and never give up. If you believe in your writing, you will have to deal with both the triumphs and the downfalls. Steady Moon Press will do everything they can to give serious/quality writers a chance and believes every writer should have the opportunity to submit. We look forward to the future! Keep writing!

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Look for Through the Blinds, by Amanda Clark, coming out soon. Also, look for Clark's rereleasing of Looking at the Moon in the Future. Additionally, Steady Moon Press will be accepting submissions at a later date for a poetry anthology. Submit 1-5 poems and winners will be published in an anthology book along with receiving a free copy, not to mention the publicity. Good stuff. Don't forget to follow us on facebook, twitter, pinterest, and our website at http://www.steadymoonpress.com
Steady Moon Press was founded in May of 2012 by published author, Amanda Clark. Clark wanted to develop her own publishing company that provided more rights to authors, quality customer service and care for the author's vision, as well as free opportunities for authors of poetry. Clark was frustrated with the low royalty rates of traditional publishers and binding contracts. She also was frustrated with the lack of opportunities for books of poetry. She sought to establish her own company that focused on the author's needs and the Narrative Poetry genre. She felt as an author herself, with a passion for poetry, she could make this happen.

Steady Moon Press is a micro publishing company that takes care of all the initial up front fees and does not charge the author a cent. Steady Moon Press makes this possible by printing books based on customer demand and a screening process that selects quality poets. Steady Moon provides authors with the opportunity to get their poetic story out to the public in a timely and professional manner. Unlike many other publishers out there, there is absolutely no catch. Accepted authors do not pay anything, they are not locked into a contract without their book rights, and they are encouraged to participate in the publishing process. Founder of Steady Moon Press, Amanda Clark, loves poetry and respects authors, and has made it her mission to put authors first.

Steady Moon Press accepts and screens submissions of poetic narratives. If accepted, we provide authors with editing, formatting, and cover design. In addition to making your book available on amazon and other online retailers, Steady Moon will add your book to our web page, facebook page, and also distribute press releases to local papers in your community.
Your book will also be assigned its own unique ISBN if you wish to contact other retailers.

Additionally, you will hold rights to your book. This means that if you wish to leave Steady Moon (although we would hate to see you go) for any reason, you can, at any time. Please note that your book would cease in print through Steady Moon and the Steady Moon Press trademark name and logo could no longer be printed in your book.

Accepted authors are also invited to help in the publishing process. They can choose to submit their own photographs for cover art, participate in the editing process, and choose to write the back cover. If the author is not interested in participating in any of the above, no problem, Steady Moon will take care of it for you.

Steady Moon also provides authors with a proof copy of their book before officially printing their book. This is reviewed by the author for any last minute changes. In addition to the proof, Steady Moon provides the author with quality royalties, one free copy of their final product, as well as large author discounts if they wish to buy copies for themselves (although they do not have to buy anything) Additionally, Steady Moon catalogues books with the Library of Congress.

Steady Moon also provides authors with the opportunity to create e-books if they wish to expand their market. Steady Moon will also aid you in developing an audio book.
